Scholar-Athletes of the Year, All-Sportmanship Team Announced
The Ohio Community College Athletic Conference has named individuals from seven sports as the 2019–20 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. In addition, 23 OCCAC student-athletes earned a spot on the 2019–20 All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) has named individuals from seven sports as the 2019–20 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The annual OCCAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is voted on by a conference committee which weighs academic success (50%), community service (25%) and athletic achievements (25%) in determining the recipients.
The league expanded its Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolade to include an honoree from each sponsored sport and two additional sports this season. Rebekah New, a member of the Edison State women’s basketball program, is now a two-time honoree after being tabbed as the 2018-19 OCCAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Joining New as a 2019-20 Scholar-Athlete of the Year is Hannah Campbell, a member of the Edison State softball team. Congratulations to Rebekah and Hannah!
Hannah Campbell
“3.84 GPA for year. She was very active in the community. She volunteered over 80 hours, laying wreaths at Forest Hill Cemetery with Wreaths Across America. She also helped tutoring young girls in softball at the Little Indians Clinic in Piqua.”
Rebekah New
“Rebekah was a two year Basketball Student-Athlete at Edison State and she carried a 4.0 GPA in her two years at Edison State. She earned the Coaches Award this year on a team that went 28 and 3, and won the OCCAC title and won the Regional. Rebekah is very active in the church as a youth group leader and a Sunday school teacher.”
The OCAAC has also named twenty-three OCCAC student-athletes to the 2019–20 All-Sportsmanship Team. Congratulations to the following Edison State student-athletes for being name to the All-Sportmanship Team.
Baseball
Mason Mocahbee
"Mocahbee is a starting SS for the Charger Baseball program. He is a model baseball player and student. Mocahbee was homeschooled so coming to Edison State was his first actual in-class learning opportunity. Mocahbee has started every game for us in addition to doing extremely well in his classes. He takes struggling freshman under his wing and helps guide them on the path that they need to be on. He is an excellent leader both on and off the field. I am very proud to have Mason Mocahbee at Edison State and I believe he is deserving of this award."
Basketball, Women’s
Brogan McIver
"Both on and off the court, Brogan is a leader. She helps out her teammates in anyway she can. Brogan is great young lady that cares more about others then herself. She will be the first person to go to the aid of an opposing player just to make sure that everything is OK."
Basketball, Men’s
Jaedyn Carter
"Carter displays great leadership on the court, but off the court he is second to none! Carter's number one concern is making sure his family is taken care of— intermediate family first and basketball family close second. He always takes the time to speak with those that he encounters. Carter's sportsmanship was displayed on multiple occasions throughout the season—after every game win or loss—he was the first one through the handshake line. His sportsmanship among his teammates was superior. No matter what needed to be done, Carter was always there to do it. He is a perfect candidate for the sportsmanship award and an excellent example of a role model."
Softball
Adrianna Hicks
"Hicks was a great leader for our team. No matter what the situation, we knew that she would take the lead and get things done. Every successful team needs players like her to help gel the team together."
Volleyball
Kathryn Lee
"Lee is someone that young women should look up to. On the court, Lee is an outstanding leader to her teammates, and her positive attitude is contagious. Her hard work paid off during games—she contributed 216 kills, 359 digs and 63 blocks for the 2019 season. Lee is also a great student—maintaining an outstanding overall GPA of 3.9. In addition, Lee does an impressive job of giving back. Last summer alone, she went on two mission trips, spent over two weeks helping with the Dayton tornadoes clean up and volunteers at her church’s nursery and at a local nursing home. Kathryn gives 100% in everything that she does and asks for nothing in return."
