Friday afternoon was in the upper thirties to low forties, but the cold weather could not cool off the Edison State softball team. Freshman Erika Gostomsky (Convington HS), would lead her team from the mound and the plate, debuting as a Charger she would pitch six innings of one-run softball and deliver a two-run homer against St. Clair Community College.
Sophomore Alison Cox (Triad HS) would light the fire in the bottom of the second inning with a grand slam blast into left-center-field and put her team in the lead to stay her fourth career blast as Charger. On that shot from Cox, the women would take the lead 4-1 after trailing 1-0 into the bottom of the first, marking her 4th round-tripper of her Edison State career, and would go 2-4 in the game with those 4 RBIs.
Freshman Elise McCann (Troy HS) would also bat .500 and burn up the base pads, going 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 SB, and 2 R in her debut. The Chargers did not only hit and pitch well, but they also played stellar defense.
Gostomsky's effort was backed up by several standout plays including multiple from McCann (2-4 RBI, BB, R) including a play in which she made a diving stop and beat the runner to first base with a dive for the solo putout. Freshman third-basemen Kaycie Albers (Minster HS) would also drop to her knees to snag a hot shot down her line for an out.
The Chargers would play addon in the fifth with a 3-run inning backed by Gostomsky putting an exclamation point in her debut, homering to left, knocking in two in support of her cause. The former Covington dual-sport player would finish her day with a complete game win in 6, allowing only one earned run, striking out three, and walking 3. She would also go 1-2, with a HR, BB, and 2 RBIs.
There is unlimited potential in this team with first-year coach Miranda Huddle's "Charged Up" roster, deep pitching rotation, and multiple utility players, and this would be only the first of two great games winning in 6 innings 9-1. Cold and inclement weather was no barrier for this team. Several players from the Edison State women's basketball and baseball teams braved the cold to support this team's start to their season. Today's action was just an indication and beginning of what appears to be a bright future for this team.
