The Edison State Chargers baseball team would open their season on Saturday against St. Clair Community College in doubleheader action in Piqua. The Chargers would jump out early against a struggling performance from St. Clair's mound. Their staff walked a total of 17 in game 1. The Chargers took full advantage, jumping out to a 7-0 lead at the end of 2.
Sophomore right-fielder Caleb Wurster (Indian Lake HS) would provide firepower from his bat, going 1-1 with a walk and an SB, but more importantly, he would put the nail in the coffin for the game with a three-run blast, bringing his total for Saturday to 3-5, BB, SB, 3 RBI, 2 K, AND 4 R. Wurster's home run was his first in his Edison State career.
Freshman left-fielder Byson Arthur (Dublin-Scioto HS) would also knock a run-scoring double and steal a base in game one. His overall performance on opening Saturday would total 1-4 but net a .625 OBP, drawing four walks on the day and knocking in the run in game one.
Freshman pitcher Ben Randall (Sunlake HS (Fla.)) would debut as a Charger with 5.0 IP, a win, strikeout 4, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 ER, and an ERA of 1.80. Randall's fastball hit 84 mph on the gun at one point and was consistently in the high 70s throughout the game.
Game 1 would end in a Chargers win with a score of 14-2 and in game two the Chargers would also dominate, winning that game 11-3 with much less help from the opposition who only walked 4 in game 2.
The Chargers will be in action on Sunday against St. Clair again in a doubleheader, with the first game starting at 1:00 pm.
