The Edison State Community College Athletic Department held its third annual Athletics Day on July 20 at the Piqua campus to kick-off the upcoming volleyball, basketball, softball, and baseball seasons.
Throughout the last couple of seasons, the number of athletes to commit to Edison State has continued to grow. "This season, we've had over 100 student-athletes commit to Edison State," said Nate Cole, Athletic Director.
"Our coaching staff has done a tremendous job recruiting a talented group. A lot of the athletes are local but we also have some athletes who will be joining us from out-of-state."
Also contributing to the influx of recruits is the new softball program that will officially begin next spring and be led by head coach Dan Cain. "Right now, Coach Cain has over 20 girls on his roster. I know he's excited about the level of play these girls can bring and so am I," said Cole.
Last year, nine student-athletes received post-season honors from the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) for their athletic talents. And not only did last year's athletes perform well on the court and field, but they also proved successful in the classroom.
"Thirty-eight of our student-athletes were named to the OCCAC All-Academic team because of good grades," added Cole. "That number speaks volumes about the quality of athletes we're getting at Edison State. This year, I hope to see twice as many athletes named to the all-academic team."
The volleyball team will kick off the year in athletics playing their season opener on the road August 23 against the University of Cincinnati–Clermont. Their first home game of the season will be on Monday, August 28 at 6 p.m. against Clark State Community College.
Leading the volleyball team in the upcoming season are Head Coach Julia Haupricht and Assistant Coach Markia Harris. Haupricht brings international level playing experience to the program while Harris is a returning star volleyball player turned coach.
With three returning sophomores and six freshmen for the 2017 season, the Lady Chargers are prepared to take their talents to the court. Returning to the team are Kasey Helmstetter (Wapakoneta), Erin Metz (Jackson Center), and Denise Schwieterman (Coldwater). Miranda Hickey (Jackson Center), Reagan Morrett (Miami East), Camille Odle (Leahman Catholic), Noel Ufferman (Fairbanks), Ragan Williams (Lima Senior), and Vanessa Winner (Jackson Center) will be new to the team this year.
Edison State's baseball, basketball, softball, and volleyball teams compete in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference and are Division II members of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
